Where Are We Now?
The United States of America is not what it used to be. We are fast becoming a totally Godless nation. As we wrote in a past issue, moral absolutes are quickly disappearing like other endangered species. Our justice system is no longer governed by moral principles. Its judges have become so liberal that they have ruled it is all right to kill unborn and partially born babies. This is carried out everyday in abortion clinics all over our nation. This carnage of innocent lives is supported by past Presidents as well as by the majority of our Supreme Court Judges. According to statistics compiled by the "National Right to Life News", approximately 33 million unborn babies were aborted between 1973 and the end of 1995.
Without the Bible as a guide, man is left to rationalize away his actions. He is quick to place the blame on someone else. When God confronted Adam for eating of the forbidden tree, Adam blamed Eve. (Gen. 3:12) Ever since, people have tried to avoid responsibility for their actions by justifying themselves at the expense of others or blaming it on circumstances "beyond their control." Today the art of blaming others has reached a new level. A high ranking government official was recently reported as saying that "pro-life advocates" are ultimately responsible for 1.6 million abortions that occur annually in the United States. He argued that if those who oppose abortions would agree to take these babies into their own homes, mothers would not have to abort them. This reasoning (?) says, in effect, that the "poor" mother who chooses to abort her child is not responsible for her actions, others are. How incredulous!
According to a newspaper article by Associated Press writer Jeffrey Gold, a New Jersey judge told his colleagues in July of this year not to use Bibles in swearing in jurors because a year-old state law removed references to God from the juror oath. In August this procedure was modified by NJ Chief Justice Deborah T. Poritz to make the use of swearing by the Bible optional. It seems that even here an effort is under way to remove the only basis of integrity by which a person’s conscience could be held morally responsible.
Some 2,000 years ago King Herod tried to have the Christ child killed. Not much has changed over the centuries. The world and its leaders are still trying to kill Him. For years some have been making every effort to remove Jesus Christ from the public eye. Christmas was changed to "Xmas". Christ was literally Xed out of the word "Christmas"! Nativity scenes are no longer allowed to be displayed on public property around our country. Santa and his reindeer, and Frosty the snowman have replaced the Babe of Bethlehem. Postal workers were told not greet their customers with "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Hanukkah". Many schools no longer allow reference to "Easter" vacation. It must now be called "Spring break." The Decalogue and pictures of Jesus that have hung in public places for years are being removed under order of our courts. In Bloomington, MI, a picture of Jesus was removed after an ACLU lawsuit charged that it had caused a student "psychological damage." There are thousand of other cases that could be cited to prove that there is an all-out effort to wipe out Christianity. New Age teachings and philosophies have permeated our schools. Our history books are being revised to omit the religious quotations of our past presidents. In Roslyn, NY Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg ruled that a proposed Bible Club must allow non-Christians to not only be members but that they must also be allowed to be officers in the Club.
If it were possible, as the saying goes, our country’s founding fathers would "turn over in their graves" at what is happening in this country they loved so dearly. In 1789 George Washington is quoted as saying, "The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained." In 1863 Abraham Lincoln said, "It behooves us then to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency." These godly words were never more appropriate than today.
We are living in a time when the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is under severe attack. As Christians we each have a responsibility as well as a wonderful opportunity to be "lights". Jesus said in Matthew 5:14-15;
"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house."
Let us shine in this dark world and
"continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise -- the fruit of lips that confess His Name." (Heb. 13:15)
